Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?

In California, Washington, New Jersey, and some other states, there are laws on the books saying you can't discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation when it comes to employment.

I don't agree with this policy because If I was the boss, my opinion is I should be able to decide the moral direction of my company, and gay people do not compliment morality very well.

Any chance we can get these repealed? Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?
You asked: "Any chance we can get these repealed?"

Little to none.

All that should matter is whether the person is qualified for their job. By discriminating in this way you could actually cost yourself a lot of money because of your refusal to hire highly qualified people simply because of their sexual orientation. These highly qualified individuals could then go work for a competitor. Does that make any sense?
Denying someone the means to earn a living, putting food on the table, clothing themselves and feeding their family, and putting a roof over their head because of the way they were born is immoral. Having taxpayers shell out money for unemployment benefits because a socially ignorant boss runs an immoral enterprise is stupid. That's why there is legislation against firing gay workers. Most homophobes are gay themselves, they don't feel comfortable around them, because it's like looking in the mirror and seeing their real self. Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?
the example i always use: You hire someone, but later they come out as a homosexual. This person is your very best employee and has contributed MUCH to the company. Now would you fire this person based on their sexual orientation given the fact that they've contributed so much to you're company? If so, then you clearly have bad work ethic and probably shouldn't be in charge of employing other people.

In the United States, it is illegal to fire someone based on sexual orientation. In a Business setting, you are not in a position to dictate the morality of your workers. In fact, it is also against the law to display any sort of religious symbol, aside from on your own person. There are people who have fought and died for these rights, and trust me when I say that you are opening yourself up for quite a lot of trouble if you were to fire a gay person. Namely, this person could hit you with a huge lawsuit that could effectively ruin your company.

Imagine for a moment that you were hired at a company. Sexual orientation was never discussed at any point but one day you happen to mention the fact that you have a date with a girl. Your boss finds out and fires you because he is gay and he feels that your morality is in conflict with his. Tell me you wouldn't fight that.

It is one thing not to agree with someone. It is far different to expect that you can force your ideas onto someone else under threat of termination. Gays have it hard enough as it is. It's not like its a perversion. I know quite a few gay people who have said that if they could choose to be straight and not be bullied and discriminated against, they would make that choice.

I know you are just stating an opinion, but I think you may want to reconsider it.

And that's the best advice I can give.
