Why is it okay if sentences are more harsh for crimes over religion, race, gender, sexuality, etc? Why are these people more important in the eyes of the law?Does "hate crimes" legislation make certain victims more important than others in the eyes of the law?
Apparently,Yes.
Under a "Hate Crimes" Law,if a woman in your family is Raped, and beaten, her attackers punishment will be less severe than if a woman is raped and beaten for being a known Lesbian.
Whatever example you look at,the idea of one crime being treated more harshly, due to the race or gender or whatever of the victim,is just basically wrong. In fact,it goes against THE most essential element in a decent Judicial System,"Equal Protection Under the Law"

Yes, and it is pretty sad.Does "hate crimes" legislation make certain victims more important than others in the eyes of the law?
The liberals want to help the other people as long as none of them move in next door.
As a society we have come to the judgment that we wish to take extra precautions to dissuade that type of crime because it is usually conspiratorial in nature. It is usually the type of crime perpetrated by a group of people against an individual whereas most other crimes are perpetrated by a person acting by himself.Does "hate crimes" legislation make certain victims more important than others in the eyes of the law?
It's not that any one type of person is more important. It's that certain types of people are targeted by haters a lot more. Gay people, for instance.
Crime is crime, murder is murder, harassment is harassment.
We really need to stop elevating people and giving them special rights and protections. If you want the justice system to work, make justice equal for all.
No, it makes certain crimes, and certain criminals, more heinous in the eyes of the law. It sounds like your blaming the victims for being who they are, much like their attackers do.
It does distinguish them, yes, as special classes of victims.
